For the past two days, Japanese volunteers in the country have engaged in the sale of brand new clothing and other items at the Art Gallery in Point Cruz.

Coordinator of the sale in Honiara, Kenichi Shirafuji, says the effort was initiated by former Japanese volunteers who had previously worked in the Solomon Islands.

He says their close acquaintance of association with the people of Solomon Islands makes them feel obliged to assist in a small way to those who suffered from the natural disasters.

Mr Shirafuji says the former volunteers were able to obtain assistance from clothing manufacturers in Japan who donated brand new clothing following their appeal for help.

He says that the proceeds from the sale were to be donated to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in the Western and Choiseul provinces.
