This week marks a significant step in enhancing the border surveillance capabilities of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) through Exercise Coastwatchers.
The initiative focuses on equipping personnel with the necessary skills to protect the nation's borders effectively.
Currently, 16 RSIPF students are participating in a specialized Border Surveillance course, which is being delivered by expert instructors from Defence Australia.
The training is taking place in Gizo in the Western Province and Taro in Choiseul Province.
These areas are strategically important for monitoring and managing border activities, making the training vital for national security.
Over the past three years, the Defence Cooperation Program between Australia and the Solomon Islands has successfully conducted six Border Surveillance courses under the framework of Exercise Coastwatchers.
This long-standing collaboration aims to enhance the RSIPF's capacity to safeguard the Solomon Islands’ borders against various threats, such as illegal fishing, human trafficking, and other transnational crimes.
