The Solomon Islands government plans an education and information campaign on a new set of rules for public servants.

The government has last week for the first time issued a code of conduct for public servants, outlining their responsibilities and work performance requirements.

The minister for public service, Milner Tozaka, says the code covers five areas, including law and order, respect for people, integrity, diligence and efficiency.

Mr Tozaka says the next step is to ensure that officers adhere to the new rules.

"We're designing an information and education programme for public officers to make sure that they understand the code and the consequences of breaking it. All the officers will be provided with a booklet upon appointment, ministry staff will be trained to deliver code of conduct training programmes in their departments. The public will be educated about their role too."

Milner Tozaka says the campaign will begin early next year.
