A major step forward was taken with the recent signing of a contract to engage a local contractor for the major fencing project of the Gizo Correctional Centre.

The project focuses on replacing critical sections of the inner and outer security fencing at the Gizo Correctional Centre (GCC), which have been identified as defective and no longer meeting required security standards.

Following a stringent procurement process, the Central Tender Board awarded the contract last week.

The contract was signed by SA Partners' General Manager, Mr. Andrew, in the presence of key officials, including Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) Deputy Commissioner of Operations Mr. Michael Nagu, GCC Commandant Mr. Joseph Tera, CSSI Director of Infrastructure Mr. Max Simikera, and CSSI Correctional Centre Operations Adviser Mr. George Samuel.

This project reflects the ongoing commitment and support from the Australian Government in funding critical infrastructure developments within CSSI. The Australian Government swiftly provided funds following an urgent request from the CSSI Commissioner in late May, as no allocations were available in the existing budget.

The funding decision also considered GCC's ongoing security issues, including severe overcrowding over the past year and a half, which posed significant risks to inmate containment and the safety of the surrounding communities.

Deputy Commissioner Nagu thanked Mr. Andrew for taking on this important project, which requires specialized materials and technical expertise to ensure durability in the challenging conditions of the Malakevara II foreshore in Gizo, Western Province.

The project is expected to be completed within two months, once all necessary materials are delivered to the GCC construction site.
