Founder of the country's largest non government organisation and rural development specialist Dr John Roughan has passed away.

Dr Roughan founded the Solomon Islands Development Trust in May 1982 based on the philosophy that a strong village is a strong nation.

SIDT Director Longden Manedika says Dr Roughan will be truly missed.

Mr Manedika also said Dr Roughan left behind a lasting legacy and the organisation will continue with Dr Roughan's philosophies in its work.

Apart from his tireless work in empowering the rural populace, Dr Roughan had also served as Secretary to the Prime Minister from 2006 – 2008.

Solomon Islanders used social media to reflect on Dr Roughan’s contribution to the country, a person who was truly passionate about improving rural livelihoods.
