The Fiji Army are on their way to Honiara, Solomon Islands, where they will join a regional peacekeeping force led by Australia.

“Out of concern for the safety and wellbeing of our Pacific sisters and brothers in the Solomon Islands, 50 Fijian troops will dispatch to Honiara tomorrow (today) as part of [a] reinforced platoon embedded with Australian force elements to help maintain peace and security,” the Fijian Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, tweeted earlier.

The Fiji deployment comes as Honiara residents continue to clean up the shattered capital, where much of the Chinatown area was burned down along with parts of Ranadi, east of Honiara.

A curfew has since been imposed in Honiara starting Friday last week, bringing back some normalcy to the capital city, Honiara.

In an address to the nation on Sunday, Manasseh Sogavare condemned the attack on his home, vowing not to step down.

“This was designed to pressure me into resigning … however the principles of democracy and the rule of law must always be protected," the Prime Minister said.

Opposition Leader Mathew Wale submitted a motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister on Saturday, stating that what the country needs is a political solution. He had earlier called on the Prime Minster to step down amid the chaos on the streets of Honiara.
