Continuing its increasing presence in the region, mobile operator, Digicel, through its Pacific branch, Digicel Pacific Ltd., has acquired Tonfon Communications in Tonga.

As reported by Matangi Tonga Online, Tonfon is part of the Shoreline Group of Companies owned by the Pacific Island Kingdom's monarch, King George Tupou V.
Tonfon CEO, Soane Ramanlal, made the announcement, adding that the sale will include the Tonfon mobile telephone network, Internet Service and TonfonTV.

Matangi Tonga Online quotes Mr. Ramanlal as saying, "As part of the program for His Majesty to withdraw from commercial interests in Tonga, an agreement has been reached with Digicel Pacific Ltd. for the sales of the telecommunications business."

According to Vanessa Slowey, the CEO of Digicel Pacific Ltd., it is expected that by December, the paperwork for the sale would be completed.

Digicel began establishing its presence in the Pacific with its launch in November last year in Samoa. This was followed by its entry into Papua New Guinea. The company is also in the process of entering the market in Fiji, Vanuatu and other nations in the region.
