A weeklong Induction, Orientation and Ongoing Professional Development Programs for Members of Parliament successfully concluded on Friday 21st June 2024.
This final session enabled MPs to understand the House at work, Parliamentary procedure and parliamentary motions and questions which impacted their parliamentary role. Acting Clerk Jefferson Hallu delivered a compelling presentation on the Parliamentary process (things MPs should know during sittings) as well as optimizing the use of Parliament's standing orders during sessions and meetings.
Other facilitators include Wilson Orisi from the Parliament Committee Secretariat and Alice Tusipua from the Human Resource Manager division. The Strategic Plan and the institutional priorities was also discussed with Members.
Interactive discussions included strategic planning, institutional priorities, and an overview of support services provided by key Parliamentary departments including Administration, Finance, Budgeting, and Healthcare.
A highlight of the program was a guided tour where MPs interacted with support staff from various departments and key stakeholders, gaining firsthand knowledge of the resources available to them.
The induction program has equipped MPs with a profound understanding of their core responsibilities in lawmaking, oversight, and representation. MPs have gained during the week essential themes such as responsible governance, the separation of powers, and effective public leadership, fostering active dialogue and reflection among them.
International facilitators from parliamentary bodies including those from New South Wales, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, and the United Kingdom enriched the program with diverse perspectives and expertise during the weeklong induction.
The induction program is a boost to not only enhance MPs' understanding of their constitutional roles but also help them establish development priorities, personal goals, and actionable plans for their term.
Ongoing professional development initiatives will continue to address emerging challenges and further enhance MPs' skills and knowledge. This initiative marks a significant step towards empowering MPs to effectively fulfill their roles and responsibilities within the parliamentary framework.
