Australian High Commission (AHC) and Solomon Islands Climate Action Network (SICAN) are proud to launch a Climate Change Poetry Competition under the theme ‘People First’.
The competition is open to all eligible students in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Entrants must be resident in Solomon Islands, based in Honiara, and be a current student between Grade 4 and Form 7.
Entries are welcome via email, post or in hard copy from today until Sunday 13 August. The top three poems will receive a SBD$500 bulk shop gift voucher, and the opportunity to present their work at the 18 August Climate Change Tok Stori and globally through Australia and SICAN’s social media networks.
With the theme ‘people first’, the competition is an opportunity for the young people of Solomon Islands to express how climate change is impacting their people, and how communities are responding to this global threat.
Speaking about the competition, Australia’s High Commissioner His Excellency Rod Hilton said ‘Together, SICAN and Australia are honoured to be providing young Solomon Islanders this important platform to have their voices heard’.
SICAN’s President, Rodrick Rollands, said ‘This poetry competition will help enhance students’ ability, skills and confidence to voice their concerns on how climate change impacts young people in Solomon Islands. Poetry is a powerful platform that has the potential to empower and build young climate leaders, and more importantly their resilience in their own respective schools, communities and the country as a whole.’
