The Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) has received an additional $27,500 in funding from the Australian High Commission, to continue programs developing rugby throughout Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands Rugby Outreach Project, supported by an Australian Sports Outreach Program grant, is providing refereeing and coaching courses for local rugby officials in Malaita, Western Province, Renbel, Makira, and Guadalcanal.

The program, organised by SIRUF Development Officer Nick Hatigeva, provides training for coaches, referees and rugby administrators, to enhance the physical and technical development of rugby.

Workshop participants are equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct sporting programs in schools and rural communities throughout the country, increasing participation in the sport and promoting healthy lifestyles.

SIRUF has completed training tours in Malaita, where 11 rugby officials attended a three day workshop, and most recently in Gizo, Western Province, where a further 11 officials participated over three days.

The next round of courses, scheduled for late May, will be held in cooperation with the three Rugby Union Associations of Renbel Province.

The Australian High Commission is proud to support the work of the SIRUF, through the Australian Sports Outreach Program.
