The Sol2023 DFAT support Steering Committee has met for their second consecutive monthly meeting this week, since signing the Australian Government Direct funding arrangement for the 2023 Pacific Games Support Program on November 2022.

The Steering Committee which consists of representatives from; the Australian High Commission in Solomon Islands, the National Hosting Authority Secretariat, the NHA Project Management Unit, the office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury is co-chaired by representatives from the Government (MOFT) and Australian High Commission.

The Committee is established to provide oversight specifically on the overall progress of Australian Government Support project (s) in particular the Construction of Games Villages in preparation for the Games in November.

The Australian Government has contributed a total sum of SBD$100 million. A core part of this funding (SBD54 million) has been allocated for the refurbishment of seven (7) schools and institution’s dormitories and classrooms in Honiara which will serve as athlete accommodation during the Pacific Games.

These refurbishments will be an enduring legacy; providing, safe, accessible and quality accommodation for students who need to board in Honiara to complete their senior school education.

The project has since started in December and is expected to be completed within the next 7-8 months just before the Games. All Games villages are expected to open a week before the Games so athletes can settle in.

The Steering Committee is expected to meet monthly.
