The Labour Mobility Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade is urging all seasonal worker program candidates to remain focus as they prepare to undertake the employment opportunity in Australia.

In light of the recent civil unrest, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Collin Beck cautions:

“If any seasonal worker candidates involved in the riot and looting, they will not be considered and will be replaced immediately.”

PS Beck further reiterated that under the Australia Solomon Islands partnership on labour mobility programme, there are shared “Here to Work” values that all candidates are expected to uphold.

“All candidates are expected to be honest and reliable, fit and healthy and above all, law abiding citizens.”

“More than 8,000 people applied for the work ready pool in August this year and in 2021, we’ve seen a 600% increase in the number of Solomon Island workers mobilised into Australia,” said Mr Beck.

Currently there are around 2,500 workers in the Australian programs.

The Seasonal Worker Program is an important priority shared between the governments of Solomon Islands and Australia. Both countries are committed to continue the partnership to build friendship, skills, and income and business relationships.
