A photographic exhibition entitled "RAMSI: A history in pictures," which showcases the history and achievements of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) is set to open in Honiara this week.
The exhibition charts the progress of Solomon Islands in partnership with RAMSI over the past seven years and the people, places and events that have shaped this unique regional mission since it commenced in 2003.The free exhibition features a wide range of spectacular images from across Solomon Islands, including many from the initial period of weapons being surrendered. The exhibition also illustrates the progress that has been made in many areas including the strengthening of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, the reforms of government systems and institutions and the rebuilding of the Solomon Islands economy. The exhibition includes separate presentations on the contribution of each of the 15 countries that contribute to RAMSI.
RAMSI Special Coordinator Graeme Wilson said the exhibition was a fitting tribute to the true Pacific spirit displayed by the thousands of civilians, police and military personnel from across the region who have supported the Mission and its work in Solomon Islands over the past seven years.
RAMSI: A history in pictures is both a tribute to the thousands of men and women from across the Pacific who have served with RAMSI in Solomon Islands and a recognition of the countless Solomon Islanders who have partnered them in this work, said Mr Wilson.
Mr Wilson said the exhibition provided Solomon Islanders with a great opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved over the past seven years, and to look with confidence and energy at the challenges that lie ahead.
"This nation has gone through an extraordinary period of change over the past seven years. I encourage as many people as possible to visit the exhibition as it provides a great sense of what is achievable when we all work together with energy and commitment," Mr Wilson said.
The exhibition will be formally opened on Friday, 25 February by the Speaker of the National Parliament, Sir Allan Kemakeza. As the then Prime Minister, Sir Allan agreed in 2003 for RAMSI to be deployed to Solomon Islands following years of civil unrest commonly known locally as The Tensions.
