Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele recently held a significant roundtable bilateral consultation with Gauri Singh, the Deputy Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), marking a pivotal step in the Solomon Islands' renewable energy ambitions.
IRENA, an organization dedicated solely to promoting renewable energy, plays a key role in global efforts to transition towards sustainable energy solutions, and this engagement underscores the Solomon Islands' commitment to advancing its energy sector.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Manele emphasized that one of the top priorities of his Government for National Unity and Transformation is investing in areas that drive and transform the country's economy, with the energy sector being a critical focus.
This aligns with the Solomon Islands' broader goals to achieve sustainable development by leveraging renewable energy solutions to enhance economic growth and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Prime Minister Manele further confirmed that the Solomon Islands’ permanent representative to IRENA is H.E. Cornelius Walegerea, the country's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
Ambassador Walegerea will be presenting his credentials to IRENA's Director General in the near future, officially assuming his role as the Solomon Islands’ voice within the organization. He will advocate for the country's renewable energy initiatives and priorities, ensuring that Solomon Islands remains an active participant in global renewable energy discussions.
The bilateral meeting allowed for a candid and in-depth exchange of views between the Prime Minister and Deputy Director General Singh, facilitating a deeper understanding of Solomon Islands' transformation priorities, particularly in the context of energy.
