I cannot get my head around why oil palm plantation is a project suitable for Aluta Basin. Malaita is the most populated province in the country, people survive on family gardening (root crops, vegetables etc..) as oppose to plantation agriculture. I am sick of hearing gov't officials and the likes propagating that the project will create employment for Malaitans. Is that all? With the advance of technology I don't know whether every members of the landowning tribes will be employed at all. The project was an idea birth in 70s under the colonial administration. Are there other alternatives projects available. Whilst registration of customary land is a positive progress thus far, I would rather see the lands being used for other things other than oil palm.
