BY SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY
Wednesday 25 August, Noumea, SPC - For all the beauty and extraordinary richness of the Pacific, the region also holds some sad records.
Recent surveys on HIV and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections) in the region show that on average, one in four sexually active young people in the Pacific have an STI, with a chlamydia prevalence in youth of up to 40% - among the highest rates in the world*. In response to these disturbing findings, the Pacific Regional STI Working Group was established to review the situation and provide evidence-based recommendations to countries to help reduce the prevalence of STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. The Working Group comprises technical specialists from the...

A forum being held in Nadi, Fiji, is discussing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region and the attempts to halt the increasing trends in premature deaths from NCDs worldwide.
According to the Fiji Times Online, close to 63 per cent of people between the ages of 25 and 64 are overweight and obese and, according to the WHO Rep to the South Pacific, Dr. Ken Chen, the prevalence of diabetes in the same age group was 16 per cent. "There is enough evidence of the problem of NCD and I believe I don't need to remind you all of the magnitude of NCD in the Pacific," he said. He said from the world health assembly, countries from around the world including the Pacific have taken NCD to another level at the UN General Assembly when they unanimously...

Lack of funding should not weigh out commitment in the fight against HIV/AIDS, says the Director of Public Health.
Speaking at a meeting for stakeholders of the Solomon Islands National Aids Council Grants Committee, Dr Tenneth Dalipanda says sometimes lack of funds has been used as an excuse. But he says the commitment of stakeholders is more important in the fight against HIV. According to a 2010 country progress report submitted to the Special Session on HIV/AIDS of the United Nations General Assembly - the total spending relating to HIV/AIDS programmes in Solomon Islands for 2008 and 2009 has been just over SBD$9 million dollars. The report was submitted by the Solomon...
