The region has been urged to do more to control the spread of HIV AIDS.
According to a report by Australia Network News, the retiring Director of the United Nations support team for HIV AIDS control in the Pacific, Dr. Prasad Rao, is urging island nations to do more to control the epidemic spread of the virus. According to the report, Dr. Rao says 'around 90 per cent of HIV cases in the Pacific are in Papua New Guinea'. While the virus is spread in other island nations through prostitution, tourists and foreign workers, Dr Rao says in PNG the spread of the epidemic has more in common with sub Saharan Africa. Health Minister, Hon Clay Forau Soalaoi, stated in a recent interview that 'Traditional Healers,' have not yet visited his Ministry, despite many of them claiming that they have traditional cures for the killer disease HIV/AIDS.
In recent weeks many 'Traditional Healers,' as they prefer to be called, have been selling these miracle cures in the streets of Honiara causing great concern with the Ministry of Health. Mr Soalaoi says that the government recognizes this increasing problem and his Ministry has a National HIV policy and also a strategic Plan 2005 to 2010 which state that the Ministry "will work closely with 'Traditional Healers' to ensure that there is mutual understanding of their roles to the treatment of HIV." As the country faces the real possibility of a rise in HIV-positive cases next year, Solomon Islands is still without specific laws to deal with HIV and AIDS prevention and management.
Last year, the Ministry of Health declared 12 confirmed HIV positive cases, eight females and four males, five have since died. The first confirmed HIV positive case recorded for Solomon Islands was in 1994. A recent health report from the World Health Organisation has predicted at least 350 HIV positive cases for Solomon Islands by 2010. National Coordinator of the HIV and STI Unit of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Isaac Muliloa admit there is still a great gap in the Unit's work without specific HIV and AIDS related laws in the Constitution....

Discrimination and stigmatization of people living with HIV by Christian people has been reported to be widespread in various communities around the Solomon Islands.
This was according to reports released by NGOs, when presenting their updated information on their HIV advocacy programs conducted in rural and urban areas. In these reports, it has been highlighted that discrimination amongst HIV positives was not only by ordinary rural and urban dwellers but also their church congregations. Program Manager, Ms. Lorraine Satorara of the World Vision program in response to the reports said Christians should not discriminate those living with HIV rather, they should be the ones that provide care and promotion to those who are infected....

The number of people living with HIV virus has increased to 12 after results from bloods samples sent to Australia returned to the country.
The new HIV positive case was revealed to National Express by a reliable source. But attempts by National Express to contact medical authorities to confirm the new case was futile as they were reluctant to provide information. "The increasing number of cases shows that people are not responsible for themselves. The 12 confirmed cases are only from people who are willing to provide blood samples to be tested," said the source Experts said there are likely to be more people infected with the virus in Solomon Islands but are afraid to come forward to be tested. ...

Save the Children Australia (SCA) in the Solomon Islands is expanding its HIV and AIDS awareness programs to hotels and motels operating in and around Honiara, in an effort to contain the spread of the HIV and AIDS virus believed to be spreading at a high rate in the country.
