The Recently launched Rapid Employment Project, REP, funded by the World Bank, is already getting some blunt assessments on its ability to deliver, but more so on its intended recipients.
Guadalcanal Premier Stephen Panga just yesterday called on the national government to also look at ways to create jobs for the unemployed out in the provinces. Speaking shortly after the launch of the Rapid Employment Project, REP, for Honiara Mr Panga said while he acknowledged the short term approach of targeting Honiara he urged the national government to plan for similar projects in the provinces. Mr Panga said he fears that the launching of the project "may attract unemployed people from the provinces to Honiara." He said Honiara city is already over...

The Rapid Employment Project, REP, was officially launched by the Government yesterday.
The launch, with some SBD$56 million dollars provided by the World Bank, represents the culmination of the preparation and the commencement of the Rapid Employment Project. The REP aims to provide short term employment and training for the urban unemployed in Honiara. The Project will provide the opportunity for urban residents to increase their incomes through short term employment and acquire the knowledge, skills and experience that are necessary to operate in the work place. Following recent exposure on local television One News, a group of young girls residing at the Botanical Gardens in Honiara have disbanded and relocated - some to an empty land area located on a stony hill next to the Gardens.
The girls, all teenagers, come from different parts of the country. Most of them claim to be runaways from broken or abusive families and some are high school and even primary school drop outs. Living under flimsy shelters made of tattered plastic tarpaulins tied to small trees and using torn cardboard box papers as mats or bedding, up to seven young girls allegedly involved as sex workers have made homes for themselves in the area. Three young men, two of whom are said to be their 'leaders', are also sharing space with the girls. The girls ply...

There were no fireworks, not many vehicles hooting their horns, not even the odd beating of empty rubbish drums in the suburbs of Honiara.
Honiara residents say that the New Year's celebrations were the quietest in years. "I have lived in Naha for over seven years and there was not many noise, just a few rowdy drunks...nothing compared to previous years," said one Naha resident. "We drove up from church to Panatina after the countdown and I was surprised to see the roads empty, there was only two or at most three vehicles hooting their horns around town," said Jeff, a young elder. Some agree that the New Year's celebration may have been very different this year because of rising prices, particularly...

The Carols are back. And this year, they are set to be bigger and better than ever. Carols in the Islands, presented by DJ League and RAMSI, is held each year at Honiara's Lawson Tama Stadium, with over 10,000 people attending last year's event.
Now in its third year, the event features a host of performers from across the Solomons and the wider Pacific. Thousands are again expected at this year's Carols event for a night of impressive entertainment from a line-up that includes performances from Young Souls, the Burnscreek Choir, Salvation Echoes, the TGB Band, Faye Indu, the RAMSI Pacific Choir, Junior Paul (Junior Solo Icon 2009) and Jedidyer Solomon (Solo Icon 2009). "Carols in the Islands has become an integral part of Christmas celebrations in Solomon Islands," said RAMSI's Deputy Special Coordinator,...
