The former Member of Parliament for Temotu Nende John Patteson Oti is a likely candidate for the Speaker of Parliament's election on Wednesday.
Reports from the Sunday Isles Newspaper said it is possible the newly formed Coalition Government led by Prime Minister Danny Philip will nominate Mr Oti as their candidate. According to sources Mr Oti has reportedly resigned as the General Secretary of OUR Party, fueling speculations that he might be going for the top job. It said the new government prefers Oti because of his profound understanding of the Standing Orders of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands and the National Constitution. Solomon Islanders are likely to face a much tighter fiscal policy regime from the new government, meaning a reduction in government spending and a possible increase in tax.
According to the new finance minister past governments have used expansionary fiscal policies, which basically encouraged more government spending but slightly less tax, because of the boom in the forestry sector in past decades. Speaking to SIBC News after his swearing in as Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo says direct and indirect taxation is the government's primary revenue. Prime Minister Danny Philip today says rumors that the Opposition group is planning to unseat him through a motion of no confidence are "nothing more than a figment of
imagination that merely reflects political adventurism."
In a statement, Prime Minister Philip said the reports had no basis given that Hon Snyder Rini, the focus of speculations, has been with the Government all along. Mr. Rini was sworn in yesterday as the Minister for National Planning and Aid Coordination, an important portfolio which will be proactive in encouraging dialogue and interaction with our donor community. "The report is nothing more than a figment of imagination and reflects immaturity and political adventurism on the part of the Opposition," the Prime Minister said. "The...
