TRC Appeals for Sensitivity in News Reporting

The Government has again called for support towards the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC.

TRC Appeals for Sensitivity in News Reporting Officially opening the third TRC awareness workshop yesterday morning in Gizo, Western Province, Minister for National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace, Sam Iduri appealed to the media to cover TRC activities with the level of sensitivity required in dealing with such a sensitive and emotional issue. The Minister appeals to the media to try and understand the challenges the government, TRC and the people of Solomon Islands face in trying to address a very difficult past. TRC Expatriate Commissioners Arrive Today

More than five months after their appointments Ratu Jone Madraiwiwi of Fiji and Sophia Macher of Peru will finally be joining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC, today.

TRC Expatriate Commissioners Arrive Today Deputy Secretary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, David Tuhanuku says it has now been confirmed that the two non-national members of the commission are arriving today. Mr Tuhanuku also says the two international commissioners should hopefully join their national counterparts in Auki, Malaita for its provincial stakeholder's workshop. Former Militant Now a Peace Maker

Former Guadalcanal militant leader, Joseph Sangu, has testified in public that he has committed himself to the peace process in Solomon Islands.

Sangu, who commanded the respect of fellow Guadalcanal militants during the days of the ethnic tension, said he is now a converted Christian. He had served time in prison for firearms charges relating to the ethnic tension, but since leaving prison Sangu said he is working hard to ensure the country achieves lasting peace. Speaking yesterday during International Peace Day, Sangu said it took him over two years to forgive others. TRC Begins Awareness Workshop

About 80 church, women, youth and traditional leaders from all over Guadalcanal province are attending a three day workshop on the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC.

Deputy executive secretary of TRC, David Tuhanuku, says the workshop aims to educate participants on some aspects of the TRC Act, the aims and objectives of the commission and how it will help Solomon Islands and those affected by the ethnic tension. Mr Tuhanuku says at the end of the workshop, the commission will ask for nominations of individuals who will be in the TRC provincial teams in Guadalcanal. Ex-commander of the former Malaita Eagles Force, Jimmy Rasta Lusibaea, says he wants those behind the 1999-2003 ethnic unrest to face the courts instead of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC.
