Solomon's going Hydro Thanks to Tribal Groups

The tribal communities of Bahomea, Malango, Ghaobata and Vulolo in Central Guadalcanal have been congratulated for allowing the use of their renewable energy resources for the greater benefit of Solomon Islands.

Solomon's going Hydro Thanks to Tribal Groups Last week, chiefs of those communities have signed an agreement with the World Bank, the European Investment Corporation and the national government for the commencement of a feasibility study on the Tina river hydro-project in Central Guadalcanal. The Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikua, has called for mutual respect from both the landowning tribes and their people and from the international donors who will be developing the project. Landowner Seeks $30,000 Compo

A landowner in West Guadalcanal is asking the government to pay $30,000 dollars in compensation for damages to property.

Landowner Seeks $30,000 Compo The claim came after the old Poha bridge was repaired by the ministry of infrastructure last week, after massive damages caused by the recent torrential rain. The Landowner, Daniel Kikile, says the cutting of a new road beside the old Poha Bridge for vehicles to pass through damaged their properties. He said this includes sago palm trees and natural vegetation. Mr Kikile says the new road also "contaminated the river downstream which they rely on for cooking, washing and drinking." Commission of Inquiry into Land Transactions

The Commission of Inquiry on land transactions and acquisition on Guadalcanal prior to the ethnic tension era is expected to start soon.

Commission of Inquiry into Land Transactions Two members of the commission from Fiji and Vanuatu were due in Honiara yesterday. They are Pastor Manua Rabuka from Fiji and Stephen Tahi from Vanuatu. The Chairman of the commission, Mr Brian Brenton from Papua New Guinea is due in Honiara at the weekend. Mr Brenton had formerly chaired the Commission of Inquiry into the April rioting in Honiara in 2006. Healing Process for Guadalcanal Province

Guadalcanal Premier Stephen Panga says the province continues to pursue and implement important programs in respect of reconciliation and furthering the healing process within the province.

Mr Panga says the province and the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace have discussed an initiative called the Sycamore Tree Project. He says the project hinges on repentance and forgiveness which targets victims and perpetrators who have been affected in the conflict. Mr Panga says as a new initiative taken from the Bougainville Crisis, the project aims to address reconciliation and healing in accordance with the customs and cultures of Guadalcanal. Construction work is expected to start soon on the development of Doma township, West Honiara.

Work on Doma Township Set to Begin Premier of Guadalcanal Province, Stephen Panga, says a three man team has arrived from Fiji to help the provincial government finalize physical planning before work starts on the provincial capital township.
