A Former Forestry Commissioner has gotten off lightly on official corruption charges after a Magistrate ruled on a suspended sentence.
Gideon Bauro was sentenced on two counts of official corruption which he pleaded guilty to last week at the Magistrate's Court. He had committed the offences in his capacity as the Commissioner of the forestry department in 2003 when he received a SBD$50,000 cheque for himself and others on two occasions from the Lu Ling Company and Bulcan Company on behalf of the Forestry Department. The High Court has sentenced a former member of Parliament, John Kaliuae Maetia to three and a half years imprisonment for Official Corruption.
This follows a hearing last week in which submissions on the case were heard from the defence and prosecution. Mr Maetia was charged with 35 counts of official corruption while a fellow accused Clement Rojumana was charged with 25 counts of the same charges. The allegations say they had illegally granted citizenship to 25 Asians in 2003. At the time of the allegations Mr Rojumana was minister of Home Affairs and Mr Maetia was Chairman of the Citizenship Commission. Both men had stood trial at the High Court. The High Court has convicted a former Member of Parliament on charges of official corruption while his co-accused, also a former member of Parliament, was acquitted on the same charges.
John Maetia Kaliuae was found guilty on ten counts of official corruption, while Clement Rojumana was acquitted on 25 counts of official corruption. This comes after both men stood trial at the High Court on allegations that they had illegally granted citizenship to 25 Asians in 2003. Former premier of Western Province Alex Lokopio has appeared for final mention at the Magistrate's Court this morning.
It was in relation to a bribery charge which allegedly took place on the 15th of June 2009. Police have alleged Lokopio tried to bribe Freda Ngai with intent to pervert the course of Justice. Principal Magistrate Steve Wilson says the case will again go before the Gizo Magistrate Court on the 3rd of May, and Mr Lokopio is required to attend. A trial date has already been set for May 31 to June 18. Prime Minister Derek Sikua has rejected as "unfair and misguided," recent criticism of the government relating to the foiled attempts by Chung Sol logging company to export tubi logs.
In a statement, the prime minister says logging and timber exports play an important part in Solomon Islands economy, and the Forestry and Customs officers play an important role in detecting any activity that may be in breach of the country's laws. He says it was the hard work and vigilance of those officials that identified the recent proposed export of tubi; saying investigations into the matter remain in progress.
