The Asian Development Bank says there's need for the Solomon Islands Government to take immediate action to boost sustainable economic growth.
Its Solomons' Economic Report 2010 outlines the state of the economy and presents a guide to addressing the key development challenges. These show the government needs to increase its efforts in the areas of good governance and private sector development reform. The report warns that the Solomon Islands remain a high-cost, challenging place in which to conduct business and many constraints to private sector development still exist. The ADB recommends the government change that by improving infrastructure through contracting out and greater use of...

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Many countries in Asia and the Pacific are well-suited to solar power initiatives, and incentives and low-cost financing mechanisms should be made available to help the region make the transition possible, Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Haruhiko Kuroda said yesterday.
"The Asia and Pacific region has the right combination of elements - demand for energy, access to sunlight and arid land, technological maturity, and a sound investment climate," Mr. Kuroda said at the First Asia Solar Energy Forum in Manila. "As a result, there is a risk of 'Solar Divide' where developing countries cannot receive the benefit of environmental technology...

"Last year, more than 100 million people joined the ranks of the global hungry as a direct result of soaring food prices, two-thirds of whom are here in the Asia and Pacific region," said ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda. "The Investment Forum for Food Security will look at existing barriers...
