Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua has said Solomon Islands faces many challenges in its desire to develop its tourism industry, one of which is "its inability to maintain its domestic airports to recognized international standards."

Speaking last week during the 28th Annual General Meeting of the Airlines of South Pacific Dr Derek Sikua said Solomon Islands are slowly addressing the issue.

He said the Dash8 aircraft's arrival has been welcomed by the industry, and has stirred his Government into action.

Dr Sikua said his government's policy platform was to replace diminishing timber revenue with tourism adding that the "government cannot do this without an infrastructure plan to cater for tourism now and well into the future of Solomon Islands."

The Prime Minister said if he is returned in the next Parliament and forms the next government, he will instill a policy guideline that will improve domestic airports.
