The United States, working through the USAID Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and the Solomon Islands Red Cross, will provide $50,000 U.S. dollars of assistance to people affected by the recent flooding disaster in the Solomon Islands.

In announcing the assistance, U.S. Ambassador Leslie Rowe said "We hope those affected by this disaster will be able to recover quickly. This assistance is a gift from the American people to the people of Solomon Islands."

The USAID Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance provides humanitarian assistance in response to disasters around the world. It works with relief organizations in the affected country to provide emergency supplies directly to people at the grassroots level.

In 2007, the United States also provided relief assistance to residents of Western and Choiseul Provinces in the Solomon Islands hit by the earthquake and tsunami.
