TRC Seeks Clarification over Interference

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission says it will seek an explanation from responsible authorities on why a participant in one if it's closed hearings in Taro, Choiseul Province, was arrested last Friday.

One of the participants, a Samson Leketo was arrested upon an outstanding warrant of arrest issued by the High Court last year for attempted murder and intimidation charges.

The arrest was made despite an Act of parliament passed in 2008 which ensures that the TRC processes were not interfered with.

TRC Chairman Father Sam Ata described the incident as a one-off incident because the hearings held by the Commission in other provinces in the past were not interfered with.

The TRC Commissioner says despite the incident, the Commission will continue to carry out its mandate.
