Tragic End for Solomons Student

A swimming exercise turned tragic for a Solomon Islands student studying at the University of the South Pacific who drowned in the university pool.

Fiji Times reported that the incident took place 12.15pm yesterday while the deceased was taking part in lifesaving exercises at the USP Laucala campus pool as part of his education class.

The deceased was reported to have finished 40 metres of swimming in the pool and had returned to safety.

Fiji Times reported that the student, who was still in the water, started going in "twirling motion in the water and just collapsed".

The 38 year-old male student of Isabel Province was a Bachelor of Arts studying Education and Management and an SIG sponsored student said to be doing his final year.

Attempts to revive the decease was to no avail.

The deceased was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
