A field survey for analysis and a detailed design for the Improvement of Water Supply Systems for Honiara City and Auki Township in Malaita Province have been completed.

The Government Communications Unit says three Japanese experts completed the field study in both locations in mid August and are now using the data to carry out a detailed design work in Tokyo, Japan.

The study was conducted to review and revise the original project design to fit in with an agreed design by the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification.

This will lead to the future improvement of water distribution systems and the water quality in Honiara and Auki.

A Grant Agreement was signed for a total of 175-million dollars for the project in May 2009 and is now planned to begin in August 2010.

Under the project, the Solomon Islands Government and Solomon Islands Water Authority SIWA were required to complete certain undertakings.

They include acquisition of necessary land and negotiation with land owners of water source areas by the end of November 2009.
