A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the remote Santa Cruz Islands region of the Solomon Islands Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake hit at 15 minutes after midnight local time (1315 GMT Wednesday) 363 kilometres (226 miles) north-northwest of Santo, Vanuatu's largest island, at a depth of 82 kilometres, the USGS said.The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue an alert for the region.
An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April last year triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
