The first ever netball stadium for Solomon Islands is near completion in Gizo, the provincial capital of Western Province.

The stadium funded by the European Union Micro Project Phase II is expected to be complete early next month.

EU's Micro Project Coordinator, Ronald Ivupitu, said that official opening of the stadium will be held next month.

The netball stadium is the first of its kind not just for Gizo but for Solomon Islands overall.

Netball players approached said they are very happy to finally have a proper netball venue.

"We are very happy and can't wait to use our netball stadium, it has been something we have been looking forward to for quite a long time," a national player said.

She said the upcoming opening of the netball stadium will be "a historical moment for women in netball."

The players acknowledged EU Micro Project for funding the project and bringing to life a dream of most women who are actively involved in netball.
