Solomons to Celebrate Children's Day

The young generation of Solomon Islands looks forward to celebrating 'Children's Day' this Thursday.

The day will focus on issues relating to children, based on the theme 'Your decision, my participation, our future'.

In an interview with the Solomon Times, the Ministry of Women, Youth and Children Affairs' Child Desk Officer, James Rizzu, said that issues to be covered on the day includes rights of children and the need for authorities to recognise the needs of children.

Celebrations will take place in Honiara and the two tsunami-stricken provinces, Choiseul and Western.

"We specifically earmarked the two provinces because of what happened and issues covered will help them in dealing with trauma, health, education, rehabilitation issues in which the tsunami has caused on their young generation," Mr. Rizzu explained.

Mr. Rizzu said initiative to take the occasion out to the provinces is to set the motion into action in rural communities in recognition of children's day.

Honiara City Council will be organising the celebration both in Honiara and the two provinces.

Celebrations in the two provinces have been made possible through funding from various stakeholders including UNICEF and Save the Children.

Western Province will be celebrating on the 20th - 21st November whilst Choiseul Province will celebrate the event on 29th - 30th November.

It is also hoped that Isabel Province will be able to host celebrations to mark the children's day.
