Caretaker Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has appealed to the people of Solomon Islands to remain calm despite the passage in parliament of a no-confidence motion in his government yesterday.

At the same time, Mr. Sogavare thanked members of parliament who had supported him in the last eighteen months of the Grand Coalition for Change Government.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr. Sogavare said he would remain in a caretaker role until parliament elects a new Prime Minister.

"For now, I will continue performing the role of Prime Minister until a new Prime Minister and government is sworn in," he said.

Mr. Sogavare said it is important that people in Solomon Islands remain calm while the political situation is dealt with through the due process of parliament.

"Finally, I wish to thank the people of Solomon Islands for their prayers and support. In particular, I wish to place on record my profound gratitude to the members of parliament who stood by me, and with me, during the difficult period which we had encountered in recent weeks."

"I wish to thank them and the people of Solomon Islands. I will continue to serve the nation," he said.
