The Ministry of Health has advised that the case from Dubai is of the Delta variant and the three from Fiji are of the Omicron variant.

This means that we now have the two most transmissible and deadliest variants of Covid-19 in the country.

This was revealed by the Prime Minister during his first nationwide address for 2022 over the national broadcaster (SIBC).

The PM went on to commend the health and camp management teams for identifying and managing the cases in our quarantine and isolation centers.

“It is my fervent hope that we will contain and eliminate both variants in our quarantine and isolation facilities,” he said.

“Fellow citizens, if either of these two variants reach our communities and result in community transmission, the impact will be devastating due to our low vaccination rates,” the PM warned.

“We will see a sudden increase in serious disease requiring hospitalization as we have seen in many other countries.

“People with existing respiratory diseases and the elderly will be most at risk.

“We may not even be able to admit infected people for hospital care and they may have to self-isolate at their homes.

“This is the reason our front-liners are putting themselves in harms way to contain and eliminate the virus at the quarantine and isolation facilities,” he said
