The Police are currently investigating those involved in stealing half-a-million dollars from the Government Treasury about two weeks ago.

Finance Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, has been able to confirm to the media that the money was withdrawn from a local bank in Honiara using an unused cheque book from the Department.

Lilo stated that some of the people allegedly involved in the theft have been identified and are now in police custody. Equipments belonging to the group have also been seized as police seek to crack the network from within the Treasury.

Mr Lilo says he knew of the incident when he was in Palau attending the Forum Economic Ministers Meeting (FEMM) and ordered an immediate investigation and audit of the accounts.

Lilo says Cabinet will be briefed of the incident today.
