The Royal Solomon Islands Police Patrol Boat Auki is heading to Ontong Java Islands with National Disaster Management Officers, Medical staff and Police Officers to assess the situation there.

The communities of Luangiua and Pelau from the Malaita Outer Islands of Ontong Java are reported to have suffered from food shortages after flood waters caused by king tides destroyed their food gardens.

National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is sending officers with some relief supply to assist the people of the affected villages.

Police are accompanying NDMO officers to assist with the distribution of the relief supply and to attend to any Law and Order issues.

The patrol boat is expected to be departing Honiara for Ontong Java at approximately 12.00 midday today.
