The country's newly elected Prime Minister paid a moving tribute to his mother, who suffers from polio and is bed-ridden in their home village of Lokuru on Rendova Island.

Mr Philip gave a special thanks to his disabled mother who succumbed to polio just two days after his birth.

"To my surviving and bed-ridden mother in Lokuru on Rendova Island, I would like to say this mum; this is your victory as much as it is mine. Ultimately it's a victory for every Solomon Islanders."

"Today it is my conviction that this landmark event in my life cannot be a coincidence or a thing that just happened. And therefore I would like to acknowledge and thank God for giving me the chance to live and protecting and sustaining it over the years."

Mr Philip said his victory as the country's top political leader is an important landmark in his life.
