A new Governor General will be voted in today at Parliament, the sixth since independence in 1978.

At the close of nominations yesterday nine candidates have been put forward for the post.

They are the current head of State Sir Nathaniel Waena, nominated by Johnson Koli, Manasseh Maelanga, David Sitai and Augustine Taneko.

John Maetia Kaliuae was nominated by Trevor Olavae while Alfred Maetia was nominated by Silas Milikada.

Frank Kabui was nominated by Steve Abana and Walter Folotalu while Joses Tuhanuku was nominated by Peter Boyers, Nollen Leni and Bernard Ghiro.

The current Speaker of Parliament Sir Peter Kenilorea was nominated by Peter Shanel Agovaka.

Edmond Andresen was nominated by Martin Sopage, Enele Kwanairara, Mark Kemakeza and Samuel Manetoali while Reverend Philemon Riti was nominated by Francis Zama.

John Tuhaika was nominated by Clay Forau Soalaoi.

Clerk to Parliament Taeasi Sanga says the election of the new Governor General will take place in the Parliament chambers today morning with results expected to be out before lunch.
