The 8th Pacific Mini Games is underway in the Cook Islands following the opening ceremony on Monday.

According to a report by Australia Network News, the opening ceremony was a colourful one in Rarotonga, the capital, with over 1,000 athletes from 22 countries competing.

Competitions were officially underway on Tuesday and according to the main website of the Mini Games, the first gold medal of the Games was won by New Caledonia's Bina Ramesh with a throw of 47.66m in the women's javelin.
Silver went to Astrid Waheo of New Caledonia while Teuruerani Tanepau of Polynesie Francasie took the bronze.

Solomon Islands is currently in the lead with 2 gold medals followed by New Caledonia with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Tonga is currently at third with 1 gold medal.
