Our Telekom Cup National under 23 soccer championships kicked off in Honiara at the weekend following a float parade from Town Ground to Lawson Tama on Friday afternoon.

The weather's late afternoon showers did little to dampen the spirits of all those who participated in the official opening programme.

The parade ended at Lawson Tama where the participating teams had waited for the final part of the opening ceremony declaration by the Honiara City Mayor, Cr. Alfred Maetia.

Speaking before officially declaring the competition open, the City Mayor, in his message to the participants, stated that youths are more populated in this country and are under utilized.

He says Our Telekom's leading role is ensuring our youths are utilized by engaging them in national soccer competitions.

"Sports build bridges and this competition surely will promote friendship amongst the participants," he adds.

Our Telekom CEO, Martyn Robinson, could not hide his feelings, saying it was a great feeling for him to witness the opening of Our Telekom Cup competition.

He reminded all the participating teams to play in true spirit of sportsmanship, adding, "May the best team win."
