Chiefs are working closely with the police to successfully resolve a violent dispute that led to a large fight between two groups of men in Munda located in the Western Province of Solomon Islands.

At about 3.00 pm last Friday, a member of RAMSI's Participating Police Force was forced to fire two warning shots to disperse a large crowd after they continued fighting despite the use of capsicum spray by the police.

The warning shots successfully dispersed the two fighting groups and village elders then worked to bring about reconciliation between them.

The situation has remained calm since.

Police are continuing to monitor the situation with additional officers from Noro and Gizo being deployed to assist.

No injuries have been reported during this incident.

As required by standard police processes, an internal investigation into the incident is being conducted.
