A 32-year-old man has been remanded in custody at the Gizo Correctional Centre in Western Province, Solomon Islands since 13th February 2019 in connection with an alleged attempted murder incident.
It is alleged that on the morning of 12 February 2019 at Titiana Village, on Gizo Island, the defendant attacked his wife with a bush knife wounding her on her left arm.
The victim was transported to the Gizo Hospital where she was treated for the injury to her arm.
The defendant was arrested by Police in Gizo on 12 February 2019 and formally charged with one count of attempted murder pursuant to section 215 of the Penal Code.
He was ordered by the Magistrates Court at Gizo to be remanded in custody to reappear in Court in 14 days’ time.
Operational (Ops) Manager at the Gizo Police Station Superintendent Cedar Nevol says, “I would like to thank my hard working officers especially the frontline officers for responding promptly to the report to save a life. I also like to thank the police investigators and prosecution for the successful remand of the defendant.”
“I appeal to couples to resolve their issues in a peaceful manner to avoid any violence which could result in injuries and even loss of life,” says Superintendent Cedar.
She adds: “I appeal to community leaders and even relatives to intervene if they see couples are involved in any argument and help in whatever way they can to resolve the issue before it escalates. Police cannot be everywhere all the time and so it depends on members of the community to assist to prevent crime.”
“Couples should also respect and love each other. Most importantly, when you have children to care for, you have the responsibility to set a good example and not expose them to violence in the family,” says Superintendent Cedar.
The Solomon Islands has one of the highest rates of family and sexual violence (FSV) in the world with 64% of women aged 15–49 have reported physical and/or sexual abuse by a partner.
