Unconfirmed reports reaching the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) state that the massive tsunami that struck Japan may have reached the Solomon Islands.

A community Chief, Johnson Leamana, told the SIBC that the sea level rose to about three metres and swept past the coastline damaging goods and properties in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mr Leamana said the owners of those shops affected are working on the total cost of damage to their goods.

He adds that an assessment is important at this stage as Kaevanga is one of the economic nerve centres and busy sea port for Isabel province.

The people of Hograno district on Isabel Province are calling on the NDMO and the provincial authority to quickly send an assessment team to the Kaevanga commercial centre to assess the extent of damage to their commercial goods.
