Incident Over Weekend Brings Up Road Toll

A fatal accident on Saturday night resulted in a death of a young man believed to be from Malaita.

The incident occurred along the Kukum Highway between the Pacific Casino and the Top Ten nightclub.

According to witnesses, the young man was trying to cross the road when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Witnesses stated that the pedestrian was dragged a few meters on the road when the driver stopped and ran to the Kukum Police Station opposite the Top Ten Nightclub.

The SIPF along with their RAMSI counterparts halted traffic and tried to hold back crowds of people as they ran to the scene immediately after the accident in curiosity. The road was blocked for almost an hour before traffic could be directed through.

Described only as 'graphic and sad' by witnesses, the young man was pronounced dead on the scene. Witnesses were not sure if either the vehicle driver or the pedestrian was drunk.

According to the Police Media, the vehicle driver is a 27 year old male from Malaita and is currently undergoing further questioning.
