Hospital Authorities say more nurses are needed in surgery at the National Referral Hospital.

Divisional Head of the Hospital's Surgical Ward, Dr Duddley Baerodo, says the hospital needs 33 nurses to work in the hospital's three operating theatres - not the current 20 registered nurses and five nurse aids.

Dr Baerodo says the current number is enough to operate only two theatres.

He says it is important that the operating theatres are fully staffed with nurses because there are more emergency cases than general surgical cases.

He says his department is also working on a strategy to improve on the cases at the surgical ward.

According to last year's statistics, almost two-thousand surgery patients were administered.

Eighty per cent of the patients were emergency cases.
