Torrential rain in Honiara caused floods in the main city and to some extent Honiara residential areas.

Honiara was drenched with heavy rain in the afternoon of Tuesday and stopped much later in the evening.

Hard hit with floods among other areas was China Town which, according to onlookers "looked like it was sinking".

Flooding started as far as Panatina Campus in the eastern part of town and some areas in the heart of the capital, Point Cruz.

Witnesses said the rain flooded some houses and "next morning, there were debris everywhere".

Tuesday afternoon's downpour is the heaviest experienced in Honiara.

National Disaster Council did not receive any flood reports from other parts of Guadalcanal.
