Gun Owners get Compensation Today

The Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services will today compensate licensed gun owners in the Solomon Islands.

Money for the compensation package was approved by the parliament's supplementary budget sitting.

The compensation of guns will commence today until Sunday. Meanwhile, provincial gun owners will be getting their compensation soon after Honiara, Guadalcanal and Malaita province. He said that a list of licensed gun owners would be posted in various police stations within Honiara for Honiara, Guadalcanal and Malaita gun owners.

Jeffery Kauha, Under Secretary for Police, National Security and Correctional Services mentioned that the compensation would be starting with those who had given up their guns to the National Peace Council (NPC).

He added that the guns to that will be compensated are the .22 rifles and shotguns. "The total of licensed guns handed over was 1,764 overall, of that 1,317 .22 are rifles and 447 are shot guns."

"Total amount that has been approved by the parliament supplementary budget is SBD$3,742,380 for compensation," said the Under Secretary.
