The Solomon Islands Government condemns in the strongest term the "deplorable actions" against the official car of the Ambassador of the Republic of China to Solomon Islands, George Chan.

The attack last night happened whilst the diplomat was attending an official function at the Honiara Hotel. The damage included flattening of the car's tyres, rear window smashed and the official flag vandalized.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare warned that all necessary action will be taken to ensure those responsible are arrested and punished accordingly. Mr. Sogavare described the attack as not only directed at the ambassador but the entire government and the peace loving people of the Republic of China.

He apologizes for the attack stating Taiwan has been nothing but great support towards the development efforts of Solomon Islands. Mr. Sogavare said such acts were carried out by a few individuals who do not respect diplomats and seek to undermine the friendly and cordial relationship Solomon Islands and Taiwan continue to enjoy.

He said the government is shocked that the perpetrators lay their hands on Taiwan, a friend who has stood by Solomon Islands in both good and bad times.
Police are now investigating the incident and appeals to people who may have information on those responsible to contact police.
