Georgia Donates Computers to Secondary Schools

Gizo Community High School in Western Province on Friday received five computers with assistance from the Georgian Government. The five computers came as the Georgian government began fulfilling its promise of donating a thousand computers to the Solomon Islands government.

The computers were secured by former Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo in 2012.

The Georgian government sent the first set of fifty computers through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET) to the Solomon Islands government late last year.

Upon receiving the first set of computers the MFAET conducted a survey to identify schools outside of Honiara who will be beneficiaries of the assistance.

On Friday January 30, the Permanent Secretary of MFAET Mr. Beraki Jino handed over the first five computers to Gizo Community High School.

Mr Jino said the Ministry was happy to handover the computers on behalf of the Georgian Government to Gizo Community High School.

“We hope the computers will be used to help students and teachers in their academic work for the year,” Mr Jino said.

Meanwhile, Clive Maqiti of Gizo CHS thanked the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade for the timely donation.

“Currently we are only using one PC for the whole school and this has affected both staff and students,”.

“With these new computers we will now be able to prepare notes and exams for our students and also students will now be able to have access to computer when they are doing their research.

“On behalf of the School, I would to express our sincere gratitude for the five computers,” Mr. Maqiti said.

The second shipment of computers from the Georgian Government is expected to arrive in the country in the coming months from which the Ministry will continue to deliver to schools located outside of Honiara.

All costs of transporting the computers to the country are met by the Georgian Government.
