Police have charged a fourth man in relation to the murders of four people in a roadside ambush that occurred at Dereni in east Guadalcanal in September 2002.

The 30-year-old man surrendered to detectives from the Serious Crime Squad last Saturday (15th November 2008) saying that he regrets what had happened. Detectives interviewed the man and later charged him with four counts of murder. It became apparent that he was one of the four who have been evading police for the past six years.

This is the fourth arrest made in relation to this incident. Three other men have been charged this year by the Serious Crime Squad for their alleged involvement in the attack.

The incident occurred on the 3rd of September 2002 at Dereni in East Guadalcanal. A vehicle that was transporting approximately 25 people to Ngorou Clinic, which included a number of women and children, was set upon by people armed with rifles and a sawn off shotgun.

The man appeared in the Honiara Magistrates Court today and was remanded in custody. He is expected to re-appear in court Friday 21st November 2008.
