Fiji is starting recovery preparations after the heavy flooding that hit the country in the last few days.

The western side of Fiji was the worst hit with the main Western town of Nadi completely flooded, some areas with houses completely submerged.

According to one of the country's local media, Fijilive, the floods have forced 12,248 people to take shelter in over 100 evacuation centres.

'The National Disaster Management Office told FijiLive, of this number 11,607 people are in 113 evacuation centres in the Western Division'.

The flood waters have now receded from most areas and work is now beginning to assess the damages left by the flood.
Repair works have also begun, especially on the main travel infrastructure linking major towns.

According to local media, 8 lives were lost in due to the heavy flooding.
